The International Symphony Orchestra’s The ISObar Gallery will open “Our Immortal Stars“, a retrospective of Bright’s Grove-born Richard Beland‘s photography, on First Friday June 3rd.
The exhibition will open May 14th at Liss Gallery in Yorkville and run for two weeks before shifting to the ISObar Gallery on Christina Street. ISO Executive Director Anthony Wing reports that the anticipation for Beland’s first local gallery retrospective is high. “This is the first solo gallery show at The ISObar and we wanted to kick it off with a hometown success story. Richard’s work spans decades and is still evolving, so we’re privileged to host this mid-career study.”
Beland is upbeat and thoughtful about his first local exhibition. “Because I primarily work in the music industry, I find myself drawing parallels between my vocation and that of a career-minded musician. A collection of photographs equates to a band’s latest album and an exhibition is the live performance.” He adds that the opportunity to work with the ISO helped make the exhibition happen: “The fact that The ISObar concept is a driver of the symphony orchestra in our community was a big hook for me. The ISO is a jewel for Sarnia and Port Huron and it’s great to have my work featured in support of it.”
Starting out in photography in 1986, Mr. Beland soon began building a wide-ranging portfolio of live music events and artist portraiture, a career that took him to locations in the US and Europe. He later returned to the Sarnia area and created the 2-year Digital Photography Program at Lambton College, where he continues as program coordinator. In addition, he is the in-house photographer for live shows at Fallsview Casino Niagara since 2007. Mr. Beland is represented by Liss Gallery in Yorkville.
The exhibit’s First Friday opening will also feature the ISO Nexus Players performing arrangements of selections from David Bowie, The Tragically Hip and other artists featured in Beland’s photography, an onstage interview with the artist, and special musical guests.
Richard Beland: Our Immortal Stars will run June 3-September 5. Interested buyers can also purchase prints of the works featured in the show, for which Artopia and Zony’s Framing are offering framing discounts.
